The War Between the States stands alone as the bloodiest war in United States history. The number of young men who lost their lives on major battlefields in just one day is nothing short of staggering.
The lives lost to disease and illnesses are equally striking. The value of personal property and real estate destroyed and damaged during that brutal period is similarly staggering.
Indeed, the War Between the States was of such dramatic nature that if one had ancestors in this country between 1860 and 1865, there is the great likelihood that they were at least indirectly, if not very directly, affected by this conflict.
Indiana's role in the War Between the States amounted to having nearly 209,000 soldiers answer the call to arms. Of those, 26,672 lost their lives as a result of the war — killed in action, died of wounds, and died of diseases and other causes related to the war effort.
Much has been written and recorded about Indiana’s men in the War; and great treasure troves of information relating to the War Between the States can be found in the following institutions:
All three organizations have online catalogs or other virtual tools for accessing information about their Civil War materials.
As with nearly every major military conflict, much genealogical data can be gleaned from US federal government documents. An excellent example is a House of Representatives executive document [39th Congress, 1st Session, Ex. Doc. No. 108] that contains a list of artificial limbs furnished to Civil War soldiers.
The document is actually an 1866 "letter from the Secretary of War in answer to a resolution of the House of April 10, relative to artificial limbs furnished to soldiers." It indicates that more than 6,000 cases of missing limbs were attended to at a cost of $357,728 to the federal government.
Besides listing all the soldiers who received limbs, the document also provides a “list of all persons or firms, manufacturers of artificial limbs, who have been employed or authorized to furnish arms, legs, hands, or feet of their invention or construction to soldiers at the expense of the government." That list follows:
All of the individuals who served from Indiana or who were living in Indiana when they received their artificial limbs have been abstracted from the above mentioned government document. The information includes the name of the soldier, rank, company, regiment and state, residence, limb, cost, date, and the manufacturer of the limb:
