The society bestows various awards to honor achievements in the field of Indiana genealogy:
The society's Board of Directors is an elected body composed of officers (serving 2-year terms) as well as district directors (serving 3-year terms), who represent IGS members in each district of Indiana.
The society's bylaws detail how the society functions.
IGS has a lineage society, the Society of Civil War Families of Indiana, for members who can trace their descendancy from a Hoosier ancestor who served in the Union Army during the Civil War.
Each April the Indiana Genealogical Society holds a one-day conference and conducts an annual meeting of the membership.
IGS appoints individuals as Indiana County Genealogists to act as a liaison for genealogists in each county.
IGS annually bestows grants to genealogical organizations in Indiana.
Library Staff Educational Scholarship
IGS annually awards a scholarship to a library employee to help them increase their genealogical knowledge and thus better serve the public.
IGS maintains an updated listing of individuals who are willing to do on-site research in various areas of Indiana.
The Indiana Genealogical Society conducts a seminar at locations around the state. The seminar provides educational resources as well as the opportunity for genealogists to network.
