Photos of Tombstones in Weaver Cemetery, Liberty Township, Grant County, Indiana

submitted by: Dawne Slater-Putt, CG

NOTE: Beginning in the 1830's and 1840's, free African Americans, primarily from North Carolina and Virginia, moved north and formed communities in Indiana. One of these was the Weaver Settlement in Liberty Township, Grant County. At one time, Weaver was a thriving village with three churches, a general store and a number of other businesses. A century later, most of the residents of Weaver had moved to towns and cities, and the small community was gone. Weaver Cemetery, on the north side of County Road 600 South between County Road 250 West and County Road 300 West, is the only vestige of this once viable community--see Weaver Cemetery Overview (23 MB) for assorted photos around the cemetery.

Transcriptions of Weaver Cemetery may be found in the following books:

A more comprehensive list of burials in Weaver Cemetery may be found in the Marion Public Library’s Genealogy Database. The Weaver Cemetery listing in the Marion Public Library database has been compiled from a variety of sources in addition to tombstone readings, including obituaries and death records. This is helpful to researchers since a number of people buried at Weaver had no stones.

This is a database of photographs of the tombstones in Weaver Cemetery. The photos were taken by Dawne Slater-Putt on 22 October 2009. Due to the large size of some of these digital files, a high-speed Internet connection is recommended before downloading.
