Index to Civil War Soldiers' Discharge Papers for Monroe County, Indiana

PREFACE: A number of discharge papers for Monroe County, Indiana veterans of the Civil War and World War I are available on microfilm reel #177 at the Monroe County Public Library in Bloomington, Indiana. These records are particularly precious because a large number of military documents pertaining to soldiers who served in World War I and World War II were destroyed by a fire in 1973 at the facility in St. Louis where they were stored. Consequently, much of the information from these records is difficult to locate.

The discharge papers on this microfilm reveal enlistment dates and places, discharge dates and places, units in which the soldier served, battles in which the soldier took part, wounds received, ribbons/medals received and more. As veterans were not required to provide the information to the county at the termination of their services, it is certain that not all veterans' discharge papers were recorded or microfilmed.

Records from both wars are noted in Book 1. There is a Book 1 for the Civil War AND a Book 1 for World War I. Civil War records appear on a single page; World War I records are two to a page. Consequently, when viewing the World War I records, it is important to scan the entire page for a given record, not just the top portion of the page. Additional volumes of discharge records for these wars were not found on microfilm and do not appear to exist.
