BACKGROUND: The Noble County Recorder is on the 2nd floor of the Noble County Courthouse (101 N. Orange St., Albion IN 46701). On the north wall of the Recorder's office are 4 books labeled "Miscellaneous Records". Book 1 covers 1854-1889; Book 2 covers 1874-1889, Book 3 covers January 1899 through June 1899; Book 4 covers July 1889 through January 1903. These books recorded the discharge papers for many Noble County residents who served in the Civil War. Some of these residents also recorded an "Oath of Identity". Read a transcription of a sample record (PDF format).
ABOUT THIS INDEX: These books were hard to read and there may be some errors or omissions. Book 1 had issues with the way the pages were numbered - they duplicated some numbers, such as in the 200's, when page 276 was labeled 176 again.
RECORDS REQUESTS: The Noble County Recorder charges $1 a page for photocopies. I am willing to go to the courthouse and copy the record for the cost of the copy plus a small donation to the Noble County Genealogical Society. If interested, please contact:
