This is an index to Volume 2 of the original records of the West, Parrish & Pedigo Funeral Home in Spencer, Indiana, covering 1925-1928. The Owen County Public Library in Spencer has photocopies of these records. The photocopies were reduced in size from the original and, for the most part, are fairly difficult to read due to poor handwriting and a reduction in size. If the original records still exist, they may be more legible.
In those cases where legibility was especially an issue, names from the funeral records were compared against the names in other county records including, but not limited to, cemetery and death record indices. It was noted, however, that many of the names from this record set were not available in either cemetery or death record indices. When an exact spelling could not be ascertained, the chosen spelling represents a best guess.
The photocopies have a handwritten index in the front of the loose-leaf, 3-ring binder where the records are organized in numerical order by date and by page. Unfortunately, the index seems substantially incomplete. A further problem noted is that as pages have been removed from the binder to be copied, they were not always replaced in the correct position. This will likely continue to be a problem.
Each funeral record includes information about: date and place of death, cause of death, date and place of birth, marital status, parents, place of burial and burial expenses. One might assume that in those cases where burial expenses were limited, there was no tombstone and no tombstone often precludes a cemetery listing. And, although, it was legally required to notify the health department of any and all deaths, compliance was as yet haphazard during these early years particularly in a rural area such as Owen County. As a consequence, sometimes the funeral record is one of the few indications that an individual ever existed.
