Register of Negroes in Posey County, Indiana (1853-1855)

Submitted by Dawne Slater-Putt, CG

Source: Posey Co., IN Negro Register, 8 August 1853-2 May 1855, Family History Library Film No. 1428947, Item 9 (at the time of the microfilming in 1985, the original record was in the Posey County Circuit Court Clerk’s Office, Mount Vernon).

BACKGROUND: Indiana's constitution of 1851 included a clause (Article 13) that prohibited blacks from immigrating to the state. An act passed on June 18, 1852 to enforce this clause mandated that blacks that were already in the state had to register with their county, stating that they had been a resident of the state prior to November 1, 1851. These negro registers recorded their name, age, sex, birthplace, and sometimes a brief physical description.

This database contains digital images of the negro register for Posey County, as taken from the microfilm.
