Indiana Soldiers in 54th Massachusetts Infantry (1863-1865)

Submitted by Amy Johnson Crow, CG

Source: History of the Fifty-Fourth Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, 1863-1865 by Luis F. Emilio (Boston: Boston Book Company, 1891). This book has been digitized and is freely available on Internet Archive.

This database includes all of the men who were listed in this book as either having enlisted from Indiana or whose last known residence was Indiana. It should not be taken as a comprehensive list of men with Indiana ties who served with the 54th Massachusetts. The majority of the entries in this book did not include a last known address. In addition, this book did not include places of birth for the enlisted men; some men could have been born in Indiana but actually enlisted from another state.

BACKGROUND: The 54th Massachusetts Infantry was an African-American regiment, formed before the Federal government began accepting blacks into the army. Men from other states, frustrated by their own states’ prohibition on blacks serving, opted to serve in the black regiments being formed by Massachusetts. The 54th Massachusetts, led by Col. Robert Gould Shaw, sustained heavy losses at Fort Wagner, South Carolina and at Olustee, Florida. Their story is depicted in the movie "Glory."
