Source: Annual reports for the Indiana School for Feeble-Minded Youth, for the years 1891 through 1917.
The Indiana School for Feeble-Minded Youth was created by an 1879 state law for children under the age of 16 who were classified as "feeble-minded" or "idiotic". Admission was later expanded to include adults, particularly women up to the age of 45.
The school was orginally part of the Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home in Knightstown; in 1887 it moved to Fort Wayne.
The ages of the people included in this database ranged between 4 and 63. The Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne has a database of deaths at the school which covers 1912 to 1937.
