Source: Annual reports for the years ending October 31, 1886, 1887 and 1888.
The Indiana Women's Prison in Indianapolis opened in October 1873 with the transfer of 17 female prisoners who had previously been housed alongside the male prisoners at the Indiana State Prison South in Jeffersonville. Beginning in October 1873, female prisoners were sentenced directly to the Indiana Women's Prison.
The Indiana State Archives has the records of Indiana State Prison South and the Indiana Women's Prison; they have an online database that covers Indiana State Prison South for 1822-1897 and Indiana Women's Prison for 1873-1969.
