Society of Civil War Families of Indiana

The Society of Civil War Families of Indiana is a lineage society and affiliate of the Indiana Genealogical Society. If you are a Indiana Genealogical Society member who is a direct descendant of any person who served in an Indiana Civil War Union military or naval unit, or who was a resident of Indiana upon joining a non-Indiana Union unit, you are eligible to apply for membership in the SCWFI.

To be considered for the SCWFI, prospective members must fill out the application form (see notes below), include documentation proving their descendancy and submit the application fee. The SCWFI's Governing Committee will review applications received by the December 31 deadline each year and inductees will receive a Certificate of Membership and the SCWFI medal. New members are inducted in a ceremony during the Indiana Genealogical Society's annual conference each April. Application materials of SCWFI members are then stored at the Allen County Public Library.

NOTES:

In order to increase the ease and flexibility of the SCWFI application process, the SCWFI Committee will accept applications prepared in a word processing program, subject to the following restrictions:

a. The word processing application must contain all of the contents of the standard application in the exact order listed on the standard application.

b. The word processing application must include Page One of the standard application as a cover page. This cover page must be completed, signed and dated by the applicant.

c. If the submitted word processing application is unacceptable in the judgment of the SCWFI Committee, the Committee reserves the right to require a standard application be submitted instead.

In order to increase the number of approved Civil War veterans, the SCWFI Committee will accept Supplementary Applications from previously approved members at a fee of $10, or one half the current initial rate.
